Which species lacks a diaphragm

During a 7 a.m. blue-and-gold macaw nail trim, I reminded our shadow to avoid chest restraint because birds ventilate via sternal motion and air sacs, not a diaphragm. Besides gentle toweling with the keel free and using target-perch training to position calmly, what other handling or enrichment tweaks do you use for diaphragm-less species (thinking birds and most reptiles)?

For those 7 a.m. macaw trims, I set a shoulder-height station and use a rolled-towel “sling” under the feet so the keel floats while they push-breathe, and I pay with pine nuts every couple toes. With squamates, same no-diaphragm mindset: clear tub for visual cover in a warm room, 30–45 second bouts with full set-downs to ventilate; if I see tail-bob in birds or gular pumping/open-mouth in lizards, I pause — , nothing derails faster. Quick tip for 7 a.m. macaws: dim the lights and work in 20–30 sec bursts with brief hands-off pauses, plus low-flow blow-by O2 at the nares; if they fixate on the hiss, skip it. For reptiles, building on @jbradley34’s sling idea, park a small foam wedge under the cranial body to unload the ribs so they can pump while you trim — same “keel free” principle, different anatomy.

And another angle to @ajenkins99’s approach: I finished 6 by auditing an airline cargo station’s IATA LAR refresher on CR82 crate checks (IATA - Live Animals Regulations (LAR)) and pairing it with a zoo-led PPE lab using a 72-inch pole and bite shield for venomous/primate captures; the board accepted it once the agenda listed ‘permit verification’. I stitched a towel with a small U-cut ‘keel window’ so if they squirm the sternum still floats; minor caveat — it’ll fray unless you bind the edge; @amartinez58, ever try that?
